Plus Sport System™

1.5-liter, 16-valve i-VTEC
The CR-Z is powered by a 1.5-liter i-VTEC® 4-cylinder engine with Integrated Motor Assist IMA®. The CR-Z operates its 16 valves via one overhead camshaft, employing rocker arms for each exhaust and intake valve. In addition to providing variable intake-valve duration and lift profiles across the rpm range, the CR-Z's engine closes one intake valve at low rpm, running with three valves per cylinder until the engine crosses the 2300 rpm threshold, after which the engine resumes four-valves-per-cylinder operation. This makes the engine run more efficiently in the very bottom end of the power band. As an added bonus, the engine also produces an impressive exhaust note—how many hybrids can say that?
Integrated Motor Assist IMA®
Honda's IMA system is simple and compact by design. Instead of having a separate alternator and starter motor like traditional internal-combustion engines, the IMA system combines the two functions in one with an electric motor that starts the engine, accelerates the car, recharges the battery and provides regenerative braking.
6-Speed Manual Transmission
The Honda CR-Z is the world's first production hybrid vehicle to offer a 6-speed manual transmission. These six speeds reward CR-Z drivers with the perfect gear for every driving occasion — including a high final-drive ratio for excellent fuel efficiency. From the S2000 to the Civic Si, Honda has considerable experience with 6-speed manuals. So it's no surprise that the CR-Z's 6-speed gearbox is as efficient as it is engaging. Adding to the experience is an easy-to-grip shift lever finished in aluminum and black leather (EX).
Continuously Variable Transmission (CVT)
The electronically controlled continuously variable transmission (CVT) is available on all CR-Z models. Instead of gears, the CVT uses an advanced system of pulleys. This lets the CVT choose from more ratios than a conventional automatic transmission, which means the CVT will find the ideal ratio to boost engine performance or increase fuel efficiency.
Hill Start Assist
The CR-Z includes hill start assist. When the driver releases the brake to activate the accelerator, hill start assist maintains brake pressure for about 1.5 seconds to prevent the CR-Z from rolling backward. Brake pressure is released when engine torque increases, allowing a smooth and controllable drive-away.
The CR-Z's suspension system uses a combination of MacPherson front struts with lightweight forged, aluminum lower control arms and a torsion-beam rear suspension. Using struts in front makes more room available for crash reinforcement, and the rear torsion beam's compact size helps maximize cargo space. Honda engineers have tuned these components to give the CR-Z responsive handling and a decisively fun-to-drive character. At the same time, the suspension is exceptionally compliant, even over rough roads. All CR-Z models feature Vehicle Stability Assist (VSA) with traction control.
Every CR-Z is equipped with updated 16-inch alloy wheels with P195/55R16 all-season tires. Or you can upgrade to the available 17-inch alloy wheels with 205/45R17 tires.

Advanced Compatibility Engineering™ (ACE™) Body Structure
ACE™ utilizes a network of connected structural elements to distribute crash energy more evenly throughout the front of the vehicle.
Anti-Lock Braking System (ABS)
The CR-Z's anti-lock braking system (ABS) uses a special modulator to pulse the brakes to help prevent wheel lockup. This helps the driver retain steering control during hard braking. The Electronic Brake Distribution (EBD) system balances the front/rear braking forces during dynamic loading.
Front 3-Point Seat Belts with Automatic Tensioning System
Front 3-point seat belts with an automatic tensioning system ride across the lap and chest to help restrain occupants during sudden stops or impact.
Driver's and Passenger's Active Head Restraints
The driver's and passenger's active head restraints help reduce the likelihood of neck injury in a sufficient rear impact collision.
Dual-Stage, Multiple-Threshold Front Airbags (SRS)
The CR-Z is equipped with dual-stage, multiple-threshold front airbags (SRS). One or both of these airbags will be deployed only in the event of a sufficient frontal impact. If deployed, these airbags are capable of being inflated at different rates depending on crash severity, seat-belt usage and/or other factors. Frontal airbags are designed to supplement the seat belts to help reduce the likelihood of head and upper body injuries in frontal crashes.
Front Side Airbags with Passenger-Side Occupant Position Detection System (OPDS)
In the event of a moderate-to-severe side impact, the side airbag inflates to help protect the driver's or front passenger's upper body. Occupant Position Detection System (OPDS) utilizes sensors in the front passenger's seatback and is designed to help protect a child or a small-statured adult by deactivating the side airbag if the passenger leans into the airbag deployment path.
Side Curtain Airbags
To help reduce the likelihood of head and neck injuries in side collisions, all CR-Z models feature side curtain airbags. The side curtain airbag module is positioned along the side of the headliner. In the event of a sufficient side impact, this system will activate to help provide protection for the driver and passenger.
Daytime Running Lights (DRL)
Daytime Running Lights (DRL) enhance the CR-Z's visibility. EX models are equipped with LED DRLs, which add a highly visible light.
Tire Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS)
TPMS monitors all four tires, alerting the driver before pressure becomes significantly low.
Vehicle Stability Assist™ (VSA®) with Traction Control
This sophisticated safety system aids the driver in retaining control of the vehicle if side slippage is detected during oversteer or understeer conditions. When the driver is cornering or must make a sudden maneuver and traction loss is detected, the system will engage to help restore the driver's intended course.

Advanced Technology Partial Zero-Emission Vehicle (AT-PZEV)
The CR-Z was designed to excel at efficiency, so earning Advanced Technology Partial Zero-Emission Vehicle (AT-PZEV) status was a top priority. To achieve AT-PZEV status, a vehicle must be a Super-Ultra-Low-Emission Vehicle (SULEV), carry a compliant warranty on emissions equipment, have zero-evaporative emissions and include advanced technology components.
The CR-Z is equipped with idle-stop, a feature that temporarily turns off the engine to save fuel and minimize emissions when you come to a halt. Idle-stop occurs automatically on CVT models. For 6-speed models, it occurs when the car is in neutral and pressure is applied to the brakes. You'll know idle-stop is engaged by the flashing green light on the instrument panel. Once you take your foot off the brakes, the engine restarts automatically and seamlessly.
Integrated Motor Assist IMA®
Integrated Motor Assist® (IMA®) couples the i-VTEC® 4-cylinder gasoline engine with a permanent-magnet electric motor, located between the engine and the transmission. The engine alone provides an ample amount of power, but whenever a boost is needed, the electric motor kicks in, giving the CR-Z even more zip.
