Continuously Variable Transmission (CVT)
Every Insight features a continuously variable transmission (CVT). Similar to an automatic transmission, CVT is an advanced transmission that substitutes the gears found in more traditional transmissions and replaces them with a metal push-belt running between a pair of variable-width pulleys. Combined with the Drive-by-Wire throttle system, the CVT constantly adjusts to provide the most efficient drive ratio possible depending on torque load. Honda's CVT provides better fuel economy and acceleration when compared to a conventional transmission.
The Insight comes equipped with fuel-efficiency enhancement technology called Eco Assist™. Push the dash-mounted ECON button to modify various vehicle systems, minimize energy use and increase fuel efficiency. A sophisticated feedback system uses ambient color behind the speedometer to indicate how efficiently you’re driving. An Eco Display provides feedback on braking and acceleration. Plus, Eco Score provides ongoing support.

1.3-liter i-VTEC® Engine
The Insight features a highly efficient 1.3-liter, i-VTEC® 4-cylinder engine.
Integrated Motor Assist IMA®
The IMA® electric motor works in conjunction with the gasoline engine, and supplies additional power and torque in assist mode. The motor's ultra-thin design allows it to be mounted between the engine and the transmission. The motor also functions as the generator for the IMA® system during deceleration, and as a starter, quickly spinning the engine up to idle speed.
Steering Wheel-Mounted Paddle Shifters
On EX models, the steering wheel includes paddle shifters, which allow the driver to shift the car manually.

Advanced Compatibility Engineering™ (ACE™) Body Structure
The Advanced Compatibility Engineering™ (ACE™) body structure is a Honda-exclusive body design that enhances occupant protection and crash compatibility in frontal collisions. The ACE design utilizes a network of connected structural elements to distribute crash energy more evenly throughout the front of the vehicle. This enhanced frontal crash energy management helps to reduce the forces transferred to the passenger compartment and can help to more evenly disperse the forces transferred to other vehicles in a crash.
Vehicle Stability Assist (VSA)®) with Traction Control
VSA can brake individual wheels and/or reduce engine power in the event of oversteer or understeer to help regain the driver's intended path. The system also features a traction control function to help prevent wheelspin during acceleration.
Anti-lock Braking System (ABS) with Electronic Brake Distribution (EBD)
The anti-lock braking system (ABS) uses a special modulator to pulse the brakes to help prevent wheel lockup. This helps the driver retain steering control when braking hard. The Electronic Brake Distribution system (EBD) balances the braking forces at each wheel according to how the car is dynamically loaded.
The solid-cell design and central placement help protect the nickel-metal hydride (Ni-MH) battery pack.
Driver's and Front Passenger's Active Front Head Restraints
In a moderate to severe rear-end impact, the active front head restraints move forward and up, helping reduce the likelihood of neck injury.
Dual-Stage, Multiple-Threshold Front Airbags (SRS)
Every Insight is equipped with dual-stage, multiple-threshold front airbags (SRS). One or both of these airbags will be deployed only in the event of a sufficient frontal impact. If deployed, these airbags are capable of being inflated at different rates depending on crash severity, seatbelt usage and/or other factors. Frontal airbags are designed to supplement the seatbelts to help reduce the likelihood of head and upper body injuries in frontal crashes.
Front Side Airbags with Passenger-Side Occupant Position Detection System (OPDS)
In the event of a moderate-to-severe side impact, the side airbag inflates to help protect the driver's or front passenger's upper body. The Occupant Position Detection System (OPDS) utilizes sensors in the front passenger's seatback to detect the height and seating position of the occupant. If a child or small-statured adult is leaning into the deployment path of the side airbag, sensors deactivate it.
Outboard Lower Anchors and Tethers for CHildren (LATCH)
All five seats are equipped with 3-point seat belts. The rear seat features the LATCH (Lower Anchors and Tethers for CHildren) mounting system for use with compatible child seats.
Security System with Remote Entry
Insight LX and EX models are equipped with a security system with remote entry for added security and convenience.
Side Curtain Airbags
The side curtain airbag module is positioned along the side of the headliner. In the event of a sufficient side impact, this system will activate to help provide protection for front and outboard rear occupants.
 VSA is not a substitute for safe driving. It cannot correct the vehicle's course in every situation or compensate for reckless driving. Control of the vehicle always remains with the driver.

The engine is the heart, muscle and brain of any modern automobile and, rightfully, it's the most valuable part. To develop an affordable hybrid, Honda engineers took on the formidable task of cutting the cost of the powertrain while retaining the reliability and performance Honda is known for.
Because Honda engineers focused their cost-cutting measures on the powertrain, they were able to develop the rest of the car in a fashion that still manages to retain value and keep the price tag low.
